To reflect more accurately the population it serves, NEHA has a plan to build a more representative Aboriginal workforce. Called the Aboriginal Workforce Strategy, this plan intends to recruit and retain Aboriginal employees, while raising awareness of Aboriginal culture and how it can impact the workplace.
How can this be achieved? Through education.
NEHA believes every one of us can play a vital role in creating a workforce that better represents Aboriginal people.
(L) Melba Laferine, Human Resources Aboriginal Coordinator (R) Cheryl Lidfors-Karklin, Human Resources Manager
By learning about and understanding Aboriginal people and their culture, and by building partnerships between Aboriginal and non- aboriginal people, this will become a reality.
It all begins with a one-day interactive "Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop". While the primary focus is on examining Aboriginal issues, participants will begin to appreciate that there are similar differences that exist within all cultures.
Highlights of this specially designed event include:
- Creating a "culturally sensitive" work environment; essential in employee and patient relationships.
- Establishing a genuine understanding of the beliefs, history, customs, values and aspirations of Aboriginal people.
- Learning past and present issues facing Aboriginal people and how their community deals with these and other concerns.
2005/2006 Aboriginal Culture Awarenesss Workshops will take place at the Pine Falls Health Complex - Multipurpose Room. Enrolment is limited to first come, first serve - so sign up now.
Registration forms and Workshop Description are available. A letter or phone call about a week prior to the workshop will confirm your registration.
